PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To cope with an extensive operation state by providing a sensor capable of detecting the moving state of a moving handrail in contact with the moving handrail. SOLUTION: A moving handrail speed detecting means 9 abuts on a moving handrail 1 and invariably sends its state to a control means 11. The control means 11 activates a cleaner pressing means 8 after detecting that the moving handrail 1 starts moving in the specified direction, allows a cleaner to abut on the moving handrail 1 to start cleaning, and actives a timer to start counting the cleaning time. When the value of the timer reaches the set value of the duration setting switch of a set value input means, or when the moving handrail speed detecting means 9 detects the motion of the moving handrail 1 opposite to the specified direction, the cleaner pressing means 8 is reversed immediately to separate the cleaner from the moving handrail 1. These actions are repeated. A cleaner update mode can be selected by the mode selector switch of the set value input means.
