PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to efficiently carry out the treatment of sulfur-containing nitrogen compounds containing nitrogen and sulfur which are the cause for a nitrogen compound and COD component at low cost by carrying out the treatment in the co- presence of iodine ions when the treatment is carried out with microorganisms having the ability to decompose these compounds. SOLUTION: An iodine source is supplied from a supply line 3 to an aeration tank 1 and the waste water of the sulfur-containing nitrogen compounds is subjected to an active sludge treatment under aerobic conditions. Also, the nitrate nitrogen in the water flowing out of the aeration tank 1 is removed as gaseous nitrogen by the denitrifying bacteria of a denitrification tank 4. Further, the outflow water from the denitrification tank 4 is reaerated in a reaeration tank 5 and is separated to sludge and treated water in a settling tank 6. The separated sludge is returned from a return line 8 to the aeration tank 1 and on the other hand, the supernatant water is supplied from a discharge line 7 to an ensuing stage. As a result, the treatment of the sulfur- containing nitrogen compounds, such as hydroxyamine disulfonic acids, which are the cause for the nitrogen compound and the COD component is efficiently carried out at a low cost.
