PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a salt of anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester, capable of forming the salt of theα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester having a good color tone and, preferably, improved in odor generation, without necessitating recovery of a lower alcohol, its purification, its recycle and so on. SOLUTION: This method for producing a salt of anα-sulfofatty acid alkyl ester comprises a sulfonation process for contacting a fatty acid alkyl ester with sulfonating gas in the presence of a discoloration inhibitor to carry out sulfonation reaction, an esterification process for esterifying the reaction product of the sulfonation process with a lower alcohol, a neutralization process for carrying out neutralization after the esterification process to obtain a neutralized product, a bleaching process for bleaching the neutralized product to obtain a bleached product, and further, preferably, a deodorization process for deodorizing the bleached product.
