PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject new compounds capable of forming a liquid crystal element having a wide operating temperature range, drivable at a low voltage, having a high-speed response and a stable contrast. SOLUTION: The phenanthrene and fluorene derivatives are represented by formula I (R1 and R2 are each a 1-20C alkyl, alkoxyl, or the like; L1 and L2 are each CH2CH2, or the like; (l) and (m) are each 0 or 1; ring A and ring C are each trans-1,4-cyclohexylene, or the like; ring B is a bifunctinal phenanthrene residue such as a group of formula II, or the like) such as 2-(4- methylphenyl)-7-(n-propoyl)-4aα,4bβ,8aα,8bβ-tetradecahydrophenanthrene. The compound of formula I can be obtained, for example, by reacting a compound of formula III (W is CH2CH2, or the like; X and Y are each Cl, I, Br, p- toluenesulfonyl, or the like) with an organometallic compound in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and reacting the obtained compound with an organometallic compound.
