PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To manufacture a methine pigment compound having at least one sulfosubstituted aromatic group in a molecule in a simpler method by sulfonation of at least one aromatic group in the molecule. SOLUTION: A methine pigment compound having at least one sulfo- substituted aromatic group in a molecule represented by formula II is obtained by sulfonation of at least one aromatic group in the molecule represented by formula I (wherein Z1 and Z2 are each atomic group required for forming a 5- or 6-membered nitrogen-containing heterocycle; L1 to L7 are each a methine group; R1 and R2 are each an alkyl group, aryl group or heterocyclic group containing at least one aromatic group; P1 and P2 are each 0 or 1; n1 is 0 to 3; M1 and M2 are each charge-balanced counter ion; m1 and m2 are each 0 to 10; R3 and R4 are each an alkyl group, aryl group or heterocycle containing at least one sulfo-substituted aromatic group). The methine pigment compound of formula IV, as one sample, is obtained by sulfonation of the methine pigment compound of formula III.
