PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a garbage treatment device capable of being appropriately operated even when the water content of a garbage treating material itself is steeply increased to form the treating material into a material being in a lumpy state, by detecting that state. SOLUTION: The garbage decomposition treatment process using this device involves charging garbage into a garbage treatment vessel packed with a garbage treating material and performing garbage decomposition treatment operation in any one of at least two operation modes, i.e., a standard operation mode and an intensified operation mode. By using the device, the water content of the garbage treating material can be detected and the garbage decomposition treatment operation can automatically be performed in corresponding one of the above modes to the detected water content. The device is also provided with a control means for controlling the operation so that when a lumpy state of the garbage treating material is detected by a lumpy-state detection means in the garbage treatment vessel, the operation mode is shifted from the standard operation mode to the intensified operation mode and also a charge stop lamp is lighted.
