METHOD FOR SUPPRESSING RELEASING OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND/OR MERCAPTAN FROM SULFURIZED ORGANIC COMPOUND

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress an undesirable secondary reaction to the lowest level through a simple method comprising a treatment with a specific amount of an organic hydroperoxide. SOLUTION: The releasing of hydrogen sulfide and/or mercaptan from a sulfurized organic compound of a high sulfur content is suppressed by treating it with an organic hydroperoxide (e.g. t-butylhydroperoxide, cumenehydroperoxide, or the like) in an amount of 0.01-10 wt.% based on the total reaction mixture. The organic hydroperoxide is used preferably in a form of liquid by dissolving it in an inert organic solvent (e.g. cumene). The treating temperature and the treating time of a sulfurized organic compound are preferably 0-150 deg.C and 1-120 min, respectively. The above treating method can be applied to any sulfurized organic compound containing sulfur preferably in an amount of >=10 wt.% which is used as an EP additive in a lubricant.
