PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To achieve reduction in a liquid phase in a short reduction time without adversely affecting the activity of an obtained catalyst by performing the reduction using hydrogen in one process. SOLUTION: Reduction of a catalyst precursor is carried out under the existence of a liquid phase. Containing alcohols or alcohol mixtures, preferably 6-25C alcohols is advantageous to the liquid phase. In a specially performing case, an alcohol hydrogenated from aldehyde is used as the liquid phase. Hydrogen is used as reduction gas and also a mixture containing hydrogen can be used. Hydrogen ratio can be increased in the course of the reduction staring with a pure inert gas so that the reduction of the catalyst precursor may be achieved homogeneously. The volume ratio of hydrogen can be increased from 0 vol.% to 100 vol.% and the concentration of hydrogen of 20-80 vol.% is advantageous. The reduction is carried out in one process using hydrogen in the liquid phase. The reduction is performed under a moderate condition in one hydrogenation apparatus.
