PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a hair dye which doesn't dye the skin even when adhered to the skin and shows high durability without discoloration by making the hair dye include a Japanese indigo plant crude drug, a pressed juice of the Japanese indigo plant crude drug or a powder obtained by freeze-drying them as a main hair dye material. SOLUTION: The hair dye is obtained by including a Japanese indigo plant crude drug and/or a pressed juice of the Japanese indigo plant crude drug or a powder obtained by freeze-drying them as a main hair dye material. For example, a matter selected from prepared indigo leaves (a matter obtained by piling the Japanese indigo plant crude drug and fermenting it by means of sometimes sprinkling), precipitated indigo(precipitates formed by immersing the Japanese indigo plant crude drug in water and standing it) or dried indigo leaves (a matter obtained by drying the Japanese indigo plant crude drug in the sun), 0.1-20 wt.% of a reducing agent (e.g. sodium hydrogensulfite, thioglycolic acid, tocopherol or the like) and 0.01-10 wt.% of an alkali agent (e.g. triethanolamine, lysine or the like) are preferably included.
