PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a new (2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoyl)diphenyl ether compound useful as a raw material for a fluorine-containing aryl ether ketone polymer having high mechanical strength and toughness and exhibiting excellent electrical properties, thermal oxidation stability and solubility. SOLUTION: The objective (2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoyl)diphenyl ether compound is expressed by formula I (R is hydroxyl or a group of formula II), e.g. 4-hydroxy-4'-(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoyl)diphenyl ether (abbreviated as HPDE). HPDE can be produced by carrying out Friedel-Crafts reaction of 2,3,4,5,6- pentafluorobenzoyl chloride with a 4-alkoxydiphenyl ether in an organic solvent and subjecting the reaction product to dealkylation reaction. The compound of formula I can be converted to a corresponding fluorine-containing aryl ether ketone polymer by the thermal polycondensation reaction in an organic solvent in the presence of a basic compound.
