PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively retrieve perfect postal code numbers for postal items on which imperfect postal code numbers are stated at a high recognition rate. SOLUTION: This apparatus is provided with a character recognition section 15 which optically reads and recognizes the character stated on the postal items, a display section 24 and a data base 14 for storing addresses and their postal code numbers in association. The postal code numbers stated on the postal items are subjected character recognition by the character recognition section and the corresponding postal code numbers are pinpointed from the data base 14 in accordance with the portions where the character recognition is possible. The list of the pinpointed postal code numbers and addresses is displayed in a display section 24.
