PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suck an article simply and reliably and to detect the presence or absence of the article by making sucking actions several times at different positions in the storage section of a tray with a suction head, and determining that no article exists when the suction head sucks no article in any sucking action. SOLUTION: The first article storage section 2-1 on a tray 1 is selected by a control means 15, then the suction head 10 is moved to a position facing the article storage section 2-1 via the operation of a drive means 16 by the control means 15. A position 1 is selected as a sucking position in the article storage section 2-1, the suction head 10 is lowered, a vacuum pump 20 is driven to apply vacuum power to the suction head 10, and the degree of vacuum at this time is detected by a vacuum sensor 21. Sucking actions are made several times at different places in the article storage section 201, and the control means 15 determines that no article (liquid crystal cell) 3 exists in the article storage section 201 when no liquid crystal cell 3 is sucked in any sucking action.
