An apparatus for the continuous separation of a mixture of solid particles and a gas comprises a housing with an essentially round cross-section, a rotor with moving parts rotatably mounted on a rotor shaft (3) inside the housing, an inlet (essentially at a tangent to the housing for the mixture, and separate exits for the particles and gas. A base plate with an external diameter less than the internal diameter of the housing is provided in order to form a peripheral gap between the base plate and the housing wall. The base plate divides the inside of the housing into a rotor chamber containing the gas exit and the moving parts of the rotor, and a separation chamber containing the inlet and particle exit separated by an axial distance so that the inlet is closer to the base plate. The particle exit is connected to a gastight discharge device for the particles.
