PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a conjugated diene polymer in high catalytic activity by polymerizing a conjugated diene in the presence of a catalyst obtained from a metallocene type complex of a transition metal compound and an ionic compound between a non-coordinatable anion and a cation, and/or an aluminoxane. SOLUTION: A catalyst is obtained by combining a metallocene type complex of a transition metal compound of the formula: MRX3 with an ionic compound composed of a non-coordinatable anion and a cation, and/or an aluminoxane. A conjugated diene represented by the formula is polymerized at -100 to 100 deg.C for 1 min to 24 hr in the presence of the catalyst. The solvent used in a solution polymerization is desirably toluene or cyclohexane. In the formula, R1 is a 1-8C hydrocarbon group; R2 and R3 are each H or a 1-8C hydrocarbon group; M is a transition metal of group V in the periodic table; R is cyclopentadienyl, indenyl, a substituterd indenyl, fluorenyl, or a substituted fluorenyl; and X is H, a halogen, a 1-20C hydrocarbon group, an alkoxy, or amino.
