Cutting or welding with a laser beam (1) or by a jet of plasma of at least one metallic material, in which one uses a gas containing a majority of oxygen as the assisting gas for the laser beam or as the plasmagenic gas for generating the plasma jet. The gas containing a majority of oxygen is produced by electrolysis of water and is preferably produced directly at the site of utilization. The laser beam (1) is generated by a laser device (2) fed with oxygen by a feed system (4) carrying the oxygen into the laser device head (5).
