The invention concerns an associative alkaline soluble copolymer characterised in that said copolymer comprises about (A) 15 to 60 wt.% of at least one monocarboxylic or dicarboxylic alpha , beta monomer, ethylenically unsaturated in C3-C8; (B) 15 to 80 wt.% of at least a non-ionic and copolymerisable alpha , beta monomer ethylenically unsaturated in C2-C12; (C) 1 to 20 wt.% of a non-ionic biphilic monomer ethylenically unsaturated of general formula (I); (D) 1 to 10 wt.% of an ethylenically unsaturated monomer bearing at least two vicinal hydroxyl functions or a group precursor of said functions. The invention also concerns a method for preparing said polymer and its application in paper coating.
