A safe bus subscriber station (SBSS) (12,18) with a defined subscriber station address is configured when connected to a field bus in safe control system. A first log-on telegram (114) transmitted from the SSBS (18) to a housekeeping unit (70) linked to the field bus contains a defined universal address. An address allocation telegram (118) sent from the housekeeping unit to the SBSS (18) contains the defined SBSS address stored in a memory (120) for this SBSS.
