Production of bis(phosphino/arsino-) compounds comprises reaction of an alkylene sulfate with alkali metal phosphine or arsine compounds. A process for the production of compounds of formula R<5>R<6>E-CR<1>R<2>-(CH2)nCR<3>R<4>-ER<7>R<8> (1) comprises reaction of an alkylene sulfate of formula (2) with an alkali compound of formula R<5>R<6>EM (3) and an alkali compound of formula R<7>R<8>EM (4); R<1>-R<4> = H, OH, halogen, acyl, CHO, 1-12C alkyl, 6-12C aryl, whereby R<1> and R<2> or R<3> and R<4> may not be simultaneously OH; R<5>-R<8> = 1-20C alkyl, 3-10C cycloalkyl, aryl or heteroaryl having up to 4 condensed aromatic rings or 7-20C aralkyl, (un)substituted; E = P, As, N; R<6>E, R<7>E = S; n = 0-6; M = Li, Na or K.
