The fuel cell stack has a number of fuel cell units, each with a solid polymer ion exchange membrane between anode and cathode electrodes, stacked with separators. The rectangular units have longer horizontal than vertical lengths. A burner gas feed/outlet line (138b) and a feed/outlet line (138a) carrying gas containing oxygen feed gas containing combustible gas or oxygen to each unit at upper and lower sections at both ends and into the stack in the transverse direction. An Independent claim is also included for a fuel cell system.
