The invention relates to a method for automatically allocating detector addresses in an alarm system comprising a control center and at least one dual-conductor alarm line connected thereto, said alarm line being connected to a number of detectors. Each detector has a capacitor for storing energy, a measuring shunt in one conductor, an evaluating device for evaluating the voltage drop on the measuring shunt, an address memory being connected to said evaluating device, and a switch between the conductors which can be controlled by the evaluating device. The inventive method comprises the following steps: in the first phase, a voltage is applied to the line by the control center and the capacitors are charged up; in a second phase, the control center transmits a switching signal to connect all of the detector switches to the alarm; in a third phase, the control center impresses two constant currents of different levels on the alarm line with a predetermined alternation. The currents are converted into a digital signal forming a data item by means of a pulse receiver in the detector. Said data item is stored in the address memory. A logic circuit blocks any further roll-in in the address memory and opens the switch; the third phase is repeated with a different data item for each detector that is ready to receive and whose address memory is not occupied.
