The device has a first light source (14) on one side of an axis, a second light source (20) on a second side of the axis, two light detectors (18,24), each for producing signals corresp. to the light from one or other source reflected from the reflective surface (12) and a processing device (26) coupled to the detectors to produce a signal corresp. to the distance to the reflective object from the light detector signals. Independent claims are also included for an arrangement for measuring the deployment distance of a cylinder rod in a cylinder, for a working machine and for a method of measuring a distance to a reflective surface.
