There is disclosed a reverse channel power controller for use in a narrowban d wireless messaging network (100) comprising a plurality of base stations (11 1- 113) that communicates with subscriber communication devices (121-128). The reverse channel power controller (255) controls the transmission power of th e subscriber communication devices (121-128). The reverse channel power controller (255) comprises: 1) a reverse channel traffic determination circu it (270) for determining a level of reverse channel traffic received by a selected one of the plurality of base stations (124); and 2) a communication controller (10) for transmitting to the selected subscriber communication device (124) a power control command capable of causing the selected subscriber communication device (124) to adjust a power level of a reverse channel signal transmitted by the selected subscriber communication device (124).
