New cyclohexane derivatives with an alkoxymethyl group at position 1 and various types of groups attached to position 4 by ester, oxymethylene or ethylene linkages, e.g. optionally substituted 4-(2'-pyridyl)-phenyl or 5-(2'-phenyl)-pyrimidyl groups. Cyclohexane derivatives of formula (I) are new. R<1>-X-(A<1>-M<1>)a-(A<2>-M<2>)b-A<3>-Y-T-CH2OR<2> (I) T = cyclohexane-1,4-diyl; R<1> = H, 1-20C alkyl or 2-20C alkenyl (with or without asymmetric carbons), in which (a) one or two non-terminal, non-adjacent CH2 may be replaced by -O- or -CO-, (b) a CH2 may be replaced by -C=C-, (c) a CH2 group may be replaced by -Si(CH3)2-, cyclopropane-1,2-diyl, cyclobutane-1,3-diyl, cyclopentane-1,4-diyl, bicyclo(1.1.1)-pentane-1,3-diyl or cyclohexane-1,4-diyl, (d) one or more H atoms may be replaced by F and/or CN, (e) in the case of alkyl groups with asymmetric C, these C atoms are either in a branched alkyl chain and substituted with methyl, methoxy, CF3, F, CN and/or Cl or in a 3- to 7-membered ring in which 1 or 2 non-adjacent CH2 may be replaced by -O- and one CH2 group not adjacent to the asymmetric C may be replaced by -OCO-; R<2> = 1-20C alkyl (with or without asymmetric C), in which a non-terminal CH2 group may be replaced by -O-, -OCO- or -COO- and/or one or more H may be replaced by F, provided that the CH2 group nearest to T is not replaced by -O-; X = a single bond, -O-, -OCO-, -COO- or -OCOO-; Y = -OCO-, -OCH2- or -CH2CH2-; A<1>-A<3> = (a') 1,4- or 1,3-phenylene (both optionally mono- or di-substituted with CN or F), (b') cyclohexane-1,4-diyl (optionally with 1 or 2 H atoms replaced by CN and/or CH3 and/or F), (c') 1-cyclohexene-1,4-diyl (optionally with one H replaced by F), (d') 1-alkyl-1-silacyclohexane-1,4-diyl, (e') pyridine- or pyrimidine-2,5-diyl (both optionally mono-substituted with F), or (f') thiophene-2,5-diyl, with the proviso that at least one of these groups is d', e' or f'; M<1>, M<2> = =OCO-, -OCH2-, -CH2CH2-, -OCOCH2CH2-, -OCH2CH2, -C=C-, -(CH2)4- or a single bond; a,b = 0 or 1. Independent claims are included for (i) liquid crystal (LC) mixtures containing (I); (ii) ferroelectric switching and/or display devices containing a ferroelectric LC mixture as in (i).
