DEVICE AND METHOD FOR SERVING VARIABLE BRANCH METRIC OF VITERBI DECODER

PURPOSE: A device and a method for serving variable branch metric of viterbi decoder are provided to calculate branch metric by changing only contents of branch lookup table without changing a hardware even in changing of channel characteristics by providing variability in making branch metric. CONSTITUTION: A device for serving variable branch metric of viterbi decoder comprises a branch lookup table(31), a branch lookup table controller(32), and an accumulator(33). The branch lookup table stores corresponding distance calculated from outside depending on channel characteristics. The branch lookup table controller initializes the branch lookup table depending on the calculated corresponding distance, and outputs the stored corresponding distance of the branch lookup table upon inputting soft decision symbol and hypothesis. The accumulator adds corresponding distance outputted from the branch lookup table depending to code rate to make branch metric.
