PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To reduce the preliminary discharge and to improve the contrast by accumulating wall electric charges in preliminary discharge and completing the discharge in a condition in which the last wall electric charge is stored in the preliminary discharge. SOLUTION: In the preliminary discharge, wall electric charge is accumulated and the discharge is completed in a condition in which the last wall electric charge is stored. In this driving method, when a negative polarization reset pulse 52 is applied to an X electrode and a positive polarization reset pulse 53 is applied to a Y electrode in a preliminary discharge period 41-A, the potential difference of the X-Y electrodes exceeds a discharge starting voltage Vb and thus, discharge is generated. Moreover, in order to reduce a wall electric charge that is excessively formed by discharge among wall electric charges, the falling of the pulse is restored gently. After applying the reset pulses, negative potential wall electric charges are accumulated in the vicinity of the Y electrode. When a light emitting display period 41-C is completed, the state of electric charges becomes similar one at the time of the completion of the period 41-A by making the falling of the applied pulses to be restored gently.
