PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a display device, in which characters having narrow lateral widths are displayed with good balance and visibility of the display is made superior, by freely varying the display position on the display screen and the lateral widths of the characters in accordance with the width of the characters to be displayed. SOLUTION: The device displays characters employing dot matrices on a display screen with a prescribed gap between the characters. The device is provided with a memory 13a that uses a font data area corresponding to the row, which does not display characters, among the font data area that stores font data related to display contents of each column and each row of the dot matrix as the area to store the font data of the column number indicating the lateral width of the characters to be displayed.
