摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an optically nonisotropic composite material capable of improving spatial resolution of an optical detector. SOLUTION: This optically nonisotropic composite material 3 comprises two materials, i.e., a transparent bulk optical material 1 and light absorbing or reflecting fibers embedded within the transparent bulk optical material 1, wherein the fibers are substantially parallel to each other. The bulk material 1 can be a scintillator, and, in the case, the fibers 2 serve to introduce the scintillation light along the fiber direction to a photodetector cell, and to improve the spatial resolution. The composite material can be used for an X-ray apparatus (a CT scanner) with the high spatial resolution, or an electromagnetic radiation detector. The composite material is produced by arranging a powder around sacrificial fibers, subjecting the arranged product to hydrostatic pressure compression molding, removing the sacrificial fibers from the molded product, sintering the molded product to provide the transparent bulk material 1 having holes, and filling the holes with the light absorbing or reflecting fibers.
