PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To check the attainment of a fail-safe operation surely all the time, and to preclude the possibility of generation of interlock and the like even at the time of failure. SOLUTION: This controller in an automatic transmission has a set engaging condition storing means (g), an actual engaging condition detecting means (h) for detecting an actual engaging condition of an engaging element (e), an actual engaging condition storing means (i), a comparison-determining means (j) for comparing the actual engaging condition with a set engaging condition to be determined as a trouble when the both conditions are different each other, and an engaging condition commanding means (k) for a trouble time for outputting a command for coupling/releasing the engaging element (e) to an actuator (d) to be brought into a specified shift gear in response to the actual engaging condition, when the trouble is determined by the means (j).
