PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator of simple structure in which a winch is mounted on a balance weight capable of moving the car to the nearest story easily even if the brake device of the winch is kept closed. SOLUTION: A winch 15 is installed on a first supporting beam 4 in the upper part of a pit, and a car 8 is lifted or sunk to the nearest story by operating the winch 15 so that it takes up or pays off the car side end 7a of a rope 7 hanging down the car 8 and a balance weight 9.
