PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a disk device by which positioning at a focusing position can be done in a short time. SOLUTION: The disk device includes a DSP core 32 and, with the power source of the device body turned on or with an MO disk 38 exchanged, carries out the positioning of a focusing position. The DSP core 32, while an objective lens 14 is moved from the uppermost position away from the disk surface to the lowermost position, detects the maximum and the minimum value of the output (focus error signal) of an FE signal detecting circuit 26. Then, using the position of the objective lens 14 in taking in the maximum and the minimum value, the DSP core 32 determines its center position. Also, using the center position and the surface wobbling quantity of the disk 38, the DSP core 32 determines an area narrower than the area defined by the uppermost and the lowermost position. Further, the DSP core 32 makes the objective lens 14 wobble in this narrow area, and detects the focusing position based on the level of the focus error signal.
