The device has a column control circuit (40) comprising a unit placing display columns at a precharge voltage (VPRE) from functioning voltage of a line, during starting of selection of another line. The circuit has an offset voltage generator (42) for modifying the precharge voltage based on a difference between lighting instructions of the former line and lighting instructions of the latter line. The generator is interposed between a capacitor (34) and an amplifier (36). An independent claim is also included for a method of controlling an electroluminescent display.
