PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a positioning method and device for a punching press by which a work is not caught at the time of executing the punching work of a thick thickness. SOLUTION: At the time of executing the punching work of the work thick in thickness, in the case that the travel speed in the X-axis direction and/or the travel speed in the Y-axis direction are changed to a speed other than the maximum speed with an axial speed changing button 33 by an operator, a controller 29 controls so as to lower the shaft traveling speed of an X-axis direction traveling mechanism 23 and/or a Y-axis direction traveling mechanism 27 before punching, but, in the case that the shaft traveling speed before punching is changed to a speed other than the maximum speed, control is executed so as to delay the start of the traveling by automatically providing delay time after punching.
