PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the commercial value of a knife by forming a pattern on a blade surface by a build-up steel material welded on the blade surface. SOLUTION: At the time of manufacturing this knife 1, a paper pattern is formed by plotting the design of the knife 1 on cardboard or the like and cutting it out and the design of the knife 1 is marked off with a marking-off pin on a steel plate by using the paper pattern. Then, after engraving the recessed part 12 of an optional shape within a marking-off line by using a hand grinder or the like, the fused build-up steel material 13 is filled inside the recessed part 12 and welded. For the build-up steel material 13 to be used, the steel material satisfying the various conditions of hardness, impact resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, heat resistance and grindability, etc., is used. Then, after shaving the outer shape of the knife 1 along the marking-off line by using a belt grinder or the like, the perforating of a tongue, the preparation of a hilt, the pin perforating of the hilt and the cutting of an edge line, etc., are performed. Thereafter, the blade surface 11 is ground by the belt grinder or the like, heat treatment or the like is executed and it is completed.
