PURPOSE: A half-duplex communication apparatus and method is provided to maximize performance with a limited capacity by dynamically assigning memory space and channels according to the amount of transmitted and received data after making a transmitting memory and a receiving memory shared. CONSTITUTION: An ethernet line(L1) is connected to an ethernet transmitting unit(1) and an ethernet receiving unit(2). An ethernet transmitting memory controller(3) and an ethernet receiving memory controller(4) are connected to the ethernet transmitting unit(1) and the ethernet receiving unit(2) respectively. A telephone line(L1) is connected to a telephone line transmitting unit(5) and a telephone line receiving unit(6). A telephone line transmitting memory controller(7) and a telephone line receiving memory controller(8) are connected to the telephone line transmitting unit(5) and the telephone line receiving unit(6) respectively. A time division controller(12) connected to the telephone line transmitting memory controller(7) and the telephone line receiving memory controller(8) controls the assignment of transmitting and receiving bands for them(8). A shared transmitting/receiving memory area(9,10) is connected to the telephone line transmitting and receiving memory controllers(7,8). A memory area controller(11) connected to the time division controller(12) controls what the memory controllers access the shared transmitting/receiving memory area(9,10).
