PURPOSE: A method for selecting functions using a help function in a portable telephone is provided to arrange/display various and complex functions as a help item form in a character order, so that a user can rapidly select the various functions. CONSTITUTION: A controller confirms whether an inputted key is a help key(S400). If not, the controller performs an operation corresponding to the inputted key(S408). If the help key is inputted, the controller displays help function items arranged in a character order, and stands-by whether a selected item exists.(S402-404). If a user selects a help item corresponding to a necessary function, the controller performs a function corresponding to the selected help item.
