PURPOSE: A method for reducing unnecessary handoffs in mobile communication systems is provided to save network resources by eliminating a ping-pong effect generated in a handoff and to ensure a stable call by reducing network loads. CONSTITUTION: In case that a new handoff is generated(402), a mobile terminal increases a system parameter P_P_COUNT by '1' if the code or ID of a new BTS(Base Transceiver Station) is the same as a PRE_VST_BTS(403,404). If the code or ID of the new base transceiver is different from the PRE_VST_BTS, the mobile terminal assigns the code or ID of a BTS previous to the handoff to the PRE_VST_BTS(409). After increasing the P_P_COUNT, the mobile terminal compares the P_P_COUNT value with a ping-pong limit value K(405). If the P_P_COUNT value exceeds the ping-pong limit value K, the mobile terminal stops the handoff with the PRE_VST_BTS(407). However, in case that the receiving strength of the current BTS is changed to less than T_MIN or the pilot receiving strength of a BTS appointed by the PRE_VST_BTS is changed to more than T_MAX provided from a mobile communication system(408), the mobile terminal restarts the handoff(410) and assigns the code or ID of the BTS previous to the handoff to the PRE_VST_BTS(409).
