PURPOSE: An engine control device and method are provided having a map data considering an engine controlling a basic ignition time by applying corresponding map data by the engine condition. CONSTITUTION: An ignition plug(10) generates a flame for burning compressed fuel in a cylinder. A water temperature sensor(20) senses the temperature of a cooling water for cooling the engine. A knock sensor(40) senses a knock generated in engine operation. An engine control device(30) controls the engine by receiving signals of the water temperature sensor(20) and others. A plurality of map table is obtained for controlling basic ignition time of the engine by the engine condition. A map table corresponding to the cooling water temperature, octane value of the used fuel is selected, and the basic ignition timing of the engine is decided. The engine control device(30) ignites the engine by controlling the ignition plug(10), carrying out the compensation of the basic ignition timing according to the signals of the water temperature, an inhalation air temperature, etc.
