SPRING-SET ELECTROMAGNETICALLY RELEASED BRAKE

A spring-set, electromagnetically released brake includes a magnetic shell disposed around a first axis that has a radially extending pole with a coil disposed around the pole. A pivotable armature is disposed radially outward of the pole and a spring is disposed around the pole. On the free end of the armature is a first engaging element. A brake drum comprises a second engagement element. The spring positions the armature in order to cause the two engagement elements to be in contact. The energization of the coil overcomes the spring force and moves the armature radially inward. This causes the engagement elements to disengage.
