A speech recognizer having a function of nodding in response to the speech of the user, not giving any sense of uneasiness to the user. The speech of the user is fed to a speech recognizing unit (12) through a microphone (10). The speech recognizing unit (12) starts speech recognition of the fed speech. After the speech recognition, the speech recognizing unit (12) outputs the results of the speech recognition to a CPU (14). The CPU (14) conducts operations such as of the OS according to the results of the recognition. The results of the operations are reflected on a display (16), as necessary. Depending on the results of the operations, the CPU (14) outputs a speech from a speaker (20). The speech recognizing unit (12) outputs a speech being a word or words of agreement or encouragement in response to the speech of the user during the speech recognition from a speaker (20). The speech recognizing unit (12) starts speech recognition and outputs a speech being a word or words of agreement or encouragement in response to the speech through a speaker (20). Therefore, the user can utter a speech in an environment where the user speaks as if the user conversed with a pseudo-person, and hence the user can use the speech recognizing unit with ease.
