<p>An apparatus for determining the existence of signal channels in a wavelength-multiplexed optical signal and measuring the signal power levels within the channels roughly comprises a scanning filter, a power measurement device connected to the scanning filter, a controller connected to the scanning filter and the power measurement device, and a digital signal processor connected to the controller to perform numerical algorithms to determine power levels in the signal channels. A channel selector is connected to the scanning filter and the controller in an embodiment to select any one of the signal channels existing in the wavelength-multiplexed optical signal for output. The apparatus is applicable to measuring the performance of broadband dense wavelength division multiplexers (DWDMs) as well as other optical communications systems or devices.</p> |
