4,4'-Cyanine dye-based fluorochromes (I), containing a hydrophilic group and a reactive group for covalent linking to substrates, are new. 4,4'-Cyanine dye-based fluorochromes of formula (I), containing a hydrophilic group and a reactive group for covalent linking to substrates,are new. R1-R4 = H, 1-10C alkyl, 1-10C alkoxy, CF3, halo, SO3H, sulfonate group or -L-Rx, provided that at least one is Rx; or R1 and/or R3 + R1 and/or R3 = form aliphatic and/or aromatic ring(s); L = direct bond or linear, branched, cyclic or heterocyclic, saturated or unsaturated spacer having 1-20 atoms selected from C, N, P, O and S, consisting of a combination of ether, thioether, amino, ester, amide, C-C (single, double or triple), P-O, P-N, P-S, S-N, N-N, aromatic or heteroaromatic bonds; Rx = reactive group for coupling to a molecule; Y = -(CH=CR5)n-CH=, all trans -CH=CH-C(R5)=CH-CH= or a group of formula (i)-(iii); n = 0-3; m = 1-4; R5 = R1; and provided that at least one of R1 - R5 is a hydrophilic group.
