A system and method for facilitating delivery of IP data over an MPEG digita l network includes a new message--an address descriptor--contained in the Program Map Table (PMT). The address descriptor provides information, such a s a multicast MAC address, that allows a set-top box or the like to more efficiently locate the data stream on which the IP data is being carried.
