The invention relates to a manually operated inhaler (1) for substances in powder form (20), in particular, for medicinal substances. During manual operation, a specific dosage amount (20') from a dose reservoir (20) for the substance is made available in a discharge channel (21), in order to be discharged by air-propulsion from a mouthpiece opening (14) at the end (b) of said discharge channel (21). The invention aims to provide a reliable construction which is easy to use. To this end, a piston (8) which generates the discharge air-stream is provided with a cavity (17) in its shaft (15) which forms the reservoir chambers (SV) for the substance and a low pressure which is created during the return stroke of the piston (8) opens a space towards the dose reservoir (20) for the substance, in order to prepare a new dosage amount (20').
