Unsaturated compounds in hydrocarbon streams are hydrogenated on catalysts which contain at least one metal that has active hydrogenating components on a support consisting of metal, phosphor and oxygen. Catalysts of this type are produced by applying the metal containing active hydrogenating components to the support in the form of a sol.
