A system and method for effectively performing isochronous data transfers comprises a network device including an input/output (I/O) bus (314) that is coupled to an input/output (I/O) node (326) and an isochronous-capable network interface (312). The network interface (312) and the I/O node (326) may send requests to an arbiter (324) for control of the I/O bus (314) to perform a data transfer operation. In accordance with the present invention, an arbiter filter (324) is interposed between the arbiter (324) and both the network interface (312) and the I/O node (326) to filter respective requests for the control of the I/O bus. The network interface (312) advantageously provides an isochronous request (336) to the arbiter filter (324) to thereby de-assert conflicting requests (330) so that the network interface (312) may effectively perform a time-sensitive isochronous data transfer.
