The dry cleaning of waste gases from thermal processes comprises contacting powdered coke from brown coal as sorbent with the waste gas. Zeolites or zeolite-containing mineral stone is mixed with the brown coal as surface-active component, the mixing ratio between the brown coal and zeolite being adjusted depending on the type, composition and amount of the process dust contained in the exhaust gas so that the solids are made inert. An Independent claim is also included for the sorbent itself. Preferred Features: The brown coal and the zeolite are mixed in a ratio of 30-70: 70-30. The average grain size of the mixture is not more than 0,5, preferably not more than 0.1 mm.
