The method involves determining the condition of a switching element in a low-voltage protection circuit, whereby the low voltage is produced by means of a transformer on its secondary side. A capacitor connected in series with the primary winding of the transformer is cyclically charged, while its charging time is measured. A microcontroller is preferably provided, which controls the charging, records the charging time, and determines the condition of the switching element. Control signals are preferably produced in dependence on the determined condition of the switching element, and are used for a phase control mechanism of, especially a motor.
