Reducing the water content of carbon-containing ground solid materials and/or slurries comprises working up the materials and/or slurries and feeding to scattering bunkers, in which coarse materials are fed to a first scattering bunker (19) and fine materials fed to a second scattering bunker (20); scattering a thin fine layer from the second bunker onto scattering, charging and filter band (4) and applying a further thicker coarse material layer from the first bunker to form a sandwich scattered material mat (24); and inserting the mat into a mechanical thermal dewatering pressure chamber of a filter press whilst the pressed dried material is removed.
