The apparatus includes a fundamental magnet (2) for producing a fundamental magnetic field, and a gradient magnet for producing a gradient magnetic field. At least one high frequency magnetic field generator (4) and at least one high frequency magnetic field detector (4) are also provided. The high frequency magnetic field generator (4) and/or the detector (4) is formed as a crossed-field antenna. The crossed-field antenna may by fixed w.r.t. the fundamental magnet and the gradient magnet.
