The invention relates to a device (10) for injecting fuel into the combustion chamber of an internal combustion engine comprising a hydraulic pressure generator (12), an injection nozzle (14) and a control unit (16, 100, 200, 300) for determining fuel pressure in the injection nozzle (14). The control unit (16, 100, 200, 300) has an externally impinged actuator (28, 102, 202), a valve member (32, 108, 212, 302) which can be actuated by an actuator (28, 102, 202) as well as a valve seat (34, 124, 222, 320, 322), controlled by the valve member (32, 108, 212, 302) which hydraulic fluid-containing channels (36, 38, 126, 128, 224, 234, 332, 340) converge on. According to the invention, the control unit (16, 100, 200, 300) has means (130, 132) which enable equalization of the hydraulic pressures exerted on the valve member (108). The valve member (108) is operated at balanced pressure and therefore small operational forces are required to deflect said valve member. When actuator (102) measurements remain unchanged, a translating device (104, 204) can be used which allows especially large translations.
